Understanding Substrate Components – Pine Bark, Perlite, Lava, Expanded Clay & Seramis

Step 2

Choose your substrate components

Each component serves a different purpose: some create air pockets, others store water, stabilize the mixture, or provide nutrients to the roots. Combine the components to suit your plant, location, and watering habits.

You don't have to use everything. For most mixtures, three to four thoughtfully combined components are perfectly sufficient.

Aeration

Aerated components prevent compaction and bring oxygen to the roots.

Regulate moisture

Water reservoirs keep moisture available without making the mixture unnecessarily heavy.

Stabilize structure

Dimensionally stable materials prevent the substrate from settling over time.

Store nutrients

Storage additives buffer water and nutrients and release them gradually.

Mineral · particularly light

Perlite

Expanded volcanic rock that creates many air pockets and reduces substrate compaction.

Aeration Very high
Drainage Very high
Water Retention Low

Ideal for: Aroids, orchids, cuttings, and compact base substrates.

Mineral · structurally stable

Pumice

Porous volcanic rock that combines air, drainage, and moderate water retention.

Aeration Very high
Drainage Very high
Structural Stability Very high

Ideal for: Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium, Alocasia, cacti, and succulents.

Mineral · particularly durable

Lava Granulate

Dimensionally stable lava rock for permanently loose mixtures, fast drainage, and a resilient root environment.

Aeration Very high
Drainage Very high
Water Retention Low

Ideal for: Aroids, palms, cacti, succulents, and highly mineral mixtures.

Mineral · reusable

Expanded Clay

Fired clay for drainage layers, hydroponics, or as a coarse-grained additive in structurally rich substrates.

Aeration High
Drainage Very high
Water Retention Medium

Ideal for: Houseplants, self-watering systems, hydroponics, and drainage layers.

Organic · coarse structure

Pine Bark

Coarse bark pieces create stable interstitial spaces and mimic the natural root environment of many tropical plants.

Aeration Very high
Drainage Very high
Water Retention Low

Ideal for: Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium, Epipremnum, and orchids.

Organic · peat-free

Coco Coir Chips

Coarse coconut pieces create structure and simultaneously store more moisture than purely mineral components.

Aeration High
Drainage High
Water Retention High

Ideal for: Aroids, Hoya, Monstera, Philodendron, and peat-free mixtures.

Organic · fine base

Coco Coir Fiber

A loose, peat-free base that stores water and is well-suited for young plants and finer mixtures.

Aeration High
Drainage Medium
Water Retention High

Ideal for: Young plants, cuttings, green plants, and peat-free base mixtures.

Organic · high moisture buffer

Sphagnum Moss

Airy moss with high water retention for delicate roots, rhizomes, cuttings, and plant propagation.

Aeration Very high
Drainage Medium
Water Retention Very high

Ideal for: Alocasia rhizomes, cuttings, Anthurium, orchids, and delicate young plants.

Mineral · moisture storage

Vermiculite

Lightweight mineral that stores a lot of water and nutrients and protects delicate roots from rapid drying out.

Aeration Medium
Water Retention Very high
Nutrient Retention High

Ideal for: Seedlings, cuttings, Alocasia, Calathea, and moisture-loving plants.

Mineral · storage mineral

Zeolite

Natural mineral for buffering water and nutrients. Helps reduce leaching and balance nutrient supply.

Water Retention High
Nutrient Retention Very high
Structural Stability Very high

Ideal for: Houseplants, mineral mixtures, self-watering systems, and nutrient-poor substrates.

Additive · long-term improvement

Biochar

Porous biochar structure for long-term nutrient storage and supporting active soil life.

Nutrient Retention Very high
Water Retention High
Structural Stability Very high

Ideal for: Organic-mineral mixtures, green plants, herbs, and long-term cultivation.

Additive · substrate hygiene

Activated Carbon

Porous carbon that binds organic residues and odors, thereby supporting a clean root environment.

Substrate Hygiene Very high
Drainage High
Water Retention Medium

Ideal for: Aroids, orchids, terrariums, and closed plant systems.

The LEAFerservice principle

Plant care gets easier when every material has a clear purpose

A good substrate is not universal soil but a balanced root environment. Coarse ingredients create air, mineral components preserve structure and organic shares buffer moisture. LEAFerservice therefore explains both the purpose of each ingredient and the exact ratio of specialist mixes.

Finished mixes sit alongside individual components, allowing you to follow a proven recipe or adapt it to the plant, location and watering routine. Planters, propagation tools and accessories complete the same practical system.
