Understanding Substrate Components – Pine Bark, Perlite, Lava, Expanded Clay & Seramis
Choose your substrate components
Each component serves a different purpose: some create air pockets, others store water, stabilize the mixture, or provide nutrients to the roots. Combine the components to suit your plant, location, and watering habits.
You don't have to use everything. For most mixtures, three to four thoughtfully combined components are perfectly sufficient.
Aeration
Aerated components prevent compaction and bring oxygen to the roots.
Regulate moisture
Water reservoirs keep moisture available without making the mixture unnecessarily heavy.
Stabilize structure
Dimensionally stable materials prevent the substrate from settling over time.
Store nutrients
Storage additives buffer water and nutrients and release them gradually.
Perlite
Expanded volcanic rock that creates many air pockets and reduces substrate compaction.
Ideal for: Aroids, orchids, cuttings, and compact base substrates.
Pumice
Porous volcanic rock that combines air, drainage, and moderate water retention.
Ideal for: Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium, Alocasia, cacti, and succulents.
Lava Granulate
Dimensionally stable lava rock for permanently loose mixtures, fast drainage, and a resilient root environment.
Ideal for: Aroids, palms, cacti, succulents, and highly mineral mixtures.
Expanded Clay
Fired clay for drainage layers, hydroponics, or as a coarse-grained additive in structurally rich substrates.
Ideal for: Houseplants, self-watering systems, hydroponics, and drainage layers.
Pine Bark
Coarse bark pieces create stable interstitial spaces and mimic the natural root environment of many tropical plants.
Ideal for: Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium, Epipremnum, and orchids.
Coco Coir Chips
Coarse coconut pieces create structure and simultaneously store more moisture than purely mineral components.
Ideal for: Aroids, Hoya, Monstera, Philodendron, and peat-free mixtures.
Coco Coir Fiber
A loose, peat-free base that stores water and is well-suited for young plants and finer mixtures.
Ideal for: Young plants, cuttings, green plants, and peat-free base mixtures.
Sphagnum Moss
Airy moss with high water retention for delicate roots, rhizomes, cuttings, and plant propagation.
Ideal for: Alocasia rhizomes, cuttings, Anthurium, orchids, and delicate young plants.
Vermiculite
Lightweight mineral that stores a lot of water and nutrients and protects delicate roots from rapid drying out.
Ideal for: Seedlings, cuttings, Alocasia, Calathea, and moisture-loving plants.
Zeolite
Natural mineral for buffering water and nutrients. Helps reduce leaching and balance nutrient supply.
Ideal for: Houseplants, mineral mixtures, self-watering systems, and nutrient-poor substrates.
Biochar
Porous biochar structure for long-term nutrient storage and supporting active soil life.
Ideal for: Organic-mineral mixtures, green plants, herbs, and long-term cultivation.
Activated Carbon
Porous carbon that binds organic residues and odors, thereby supporting a clean root environment.
Ideal for: Aroids, orchids, terrariums, and closed plant systems.
